Getting To Know Model Train Sets

Kids and adults alike take pleasure in train sets whether they are bought in the toy department of a department store or in a specialty hobby store. Children often choose colorful train sets especially in the Christmas season while serious model train hobbyists go for the latest model trains from their trusted hobby store.

Collecting train sets is a type of pastime that is popular throughout the world. They are also a popular gift choice whether it is given to a child or an adult. Because these are train sets, it is not that complicated to assemble the pieces.

There is a range of sizes when it comes to model train sets and these are categorized in scales and gauges. These scales are Z, N, H0, S, 0, and G. The most widely held scale worldwide, including the US, Asia, and certain European countries is H0, which is the third smallest size scale. A little bigger than the H0 scale, the 0 is the next most popular scale there is. Numerous collectors in the UK prefer the 00 scale. The Z is the smallest of all the scale sizes while G is the biggest and often used in fairs and exhibitions. The N scale is also slowly becoming more accepted thanks to their small size and cheaper price range.

In a standard train set that is often packaged in a box, there should be inclusion of certain parts for it to be considered complete. These sets will not be complete without any of the following: the locomotive, couplers, tracks, and power pack.

The most important piece of a train set is the locomotive. Considered as the showpiece of any model train set or collection, the locomotive is essential for movement and aesthetic show. Model locomotives could either be modeled after the classic steam locomotives, diesel-electric locomotives or even the modern electric ones. Model locomotives that are created for die-hard hobbyists are made to simulate real-life engine sounds like the chugging and whistling and visual concepts like smoke and lights.

Couplers are used to attach the locomotive, trains and other rail cars and give them the lengthening and flexibility they need, particularly when turning.

The tracks come with straight and curved sections. A lot of train sets incorporate tracks that form a circle or an oval. These tracks are made for the standard market (depending on the scale) and additional track sections can be obtained and added to expand the track which are obtainable in a good number of hobby shops.

Lastly, the power pack is the piece that makes it possible for the locomotive and the train to go forward. They should also come with controllers and have a voltage of 6 to 12 volts. The controller can either be analog or digital and whatsoever suits your taste, it should be able to move your model train forward and backward, speed up or slow down, and stop and go. One particular feature of some power packs is the fail-safe feature which shuts down automatically if it detects an electrical problem. This makes it a child-friendly toy.
